Dubbo Regional Council has spent more than $200,000 relocating and refurbishing the Wellington Visitor Information Centre in a bid to encourage tourists to stay longer in the region.

The $200,330 project has been funded with money given to the council by the state government when Wellington and Dubbo City councils amalgamated four years ago.

The centre is now next to the council's administration building in a space previously occupied by the "Wellington customer service counter and corporate services".
It is close to award-winning Cameron Park and the new Wellington Aquatic Leisure Centre, on the corner of Nanima Crescent and Warne Street.
Dubbo regional mayor Ben Shields officially opened the centre this month.
He said its upgrade and relocation was an "important and exciting" project, funded by council in support of local tourism.
"The new centre provides an improved visitor experience with enhanced retail space devoted to promoting the tourism attractions in Wellington and the wider Dubbo Region," he said.
"Wellington has so much to offer our tourists. It's important to create a visitor information centre that is prominent and easy to access.
"We hope this centre will encourage those who are stopping in the region to stay an extra night or two which will help boost the local economy."
A large range of "local artisan food" is available from the centre with the council urging Wellington residents and visitors to buy it.
"The support of the local community will make all the difference to our local producers," Cr Shields said.
"We encourage the community to head in and buy the great variety of local products."
The council is highlighting the region's "wonderful and unique" Wellington Caves and Lake Burrendong, which is "three times the size of Sydney Harbour".
It also points to the "majestic" Mount Arthur Ranges and its walking trails, and a "few hidden gems" such as the Fern Gully Arboretum and information about Wellington's rich heritage.
On average, more than 15,000 people use the centre annually.
It follows COVIDSafe guidelines and opens seven days a week from 9am to 5pm.
