THE Starrs are shining bright on the basketball court with talented siblings Annobel, Elliot and Majella fast making their mark. All three are paving a career pathway in basketball with the talented trio gaining selection in representative teams. Annobel, 17, was a part of the NSW Country under-18s basketball team that played in Brisbane last April. She has now been selected as a part of the NSW All Schools basketball team to compete in the School Sport Australia Combined Championships in Perth in August. All around sportsman, Elliot, will turn out for the NSW Country under-16s men’s basketball team to play in Adelaide next month. Little sister Majella, 13, has been selected in the under-14s talented identification program. While there is always lots of work involved, all three were keen to knuckle down and put in the hard yards to further their careers. “It should be a very good experience playing the best in Australia,” Elliot said. “I’d love to make a career out of basketball, but it’s a lot of work and dedication, so I just have to try and work it out and do my best.” It was much the same situation for Annobel. “It was a bit of a surprise to be selected because I wasn’t even originally selected in the Combined Catholic Colleges team earlier this year until I received a late call-up, so I’m pretty happy,” she said. “I definitely feel I’m getting better. My improvement in the last two years has been outstanding. I’m really happy with how things are going for me.” While success is no stranger to her older siblings, Majella is slowly realising her potential as she looks to follow in the footsteps of her brother and sister. “Basketball was only a hobby for me when I was younger but now it’s starting to get a bit more serious,” she said. “It’s starting to build up a bit more now and I’d love to get to Elliot and Annobel’s standard when I’m their age.” While she is the youngest and least experienced in the family, she still has the talent to perhaps one day out shine her siblings. “There’s a bit of a rivalry going on between us but its all friendly and fun,” she said. “Hopefully I can get a bit better than them so it’s something to aim for.”
