The trial is being run by the NSW government ahead of a planned statewide rollout in late-2018 or 2019.
It was initially planned to begin on Monday but a problem with getting the app onto the app stores for download has prompted the short delay.
As well as presenting it to police, the digital licence can also be used at: Milestone Hotel, Western Star Hotel, Castlereagh Hotel, Commercial Hotel, Pastoral Hotel, Amaroo Hotel, Westside Hotel, Garden Hotel and Macquarie Inn.
It will be available from the Android and iPhone app stores on Wednesday and will be accepted by licensed premises and police from Monday.
So far 702 people from the 2830 postcode have applied to be part of the trial and anyone can still register right throughout the trial, which will run into 2018.
The idea is to test the app in real situations before it is rolled out on a wide scale through the Service NSW app, potentially next year.
Residents of the 2830 postcode can register for the trial at woolcott.com.au/ddl or at the Dubbo Service Centre.
