Running in the second of seven races for the meeting, Foodie King ($4.60) got off to a steady start as Clay Pan Boogie ($5.50) and Californian ($3) lead the pack heading into the final leg of the run.

Foodie King sat in the second last with 500 metres left before making his move.

Jockey Mathew Cahill timed his last push to perfection deciding to pull the trigger with 200 metres left as the rest of the field struggled to find traction on the Heavy 8 surface.

Talladega Night ($21) pushed up late on the outside but didn't leave enough time to make a move as Foodie King powered past Cheeky Nugget over the last 50 metres to take the win.

Had the race gone 200 metres longer, Talladega Night may have got the win but still managed a respectable second place for trainer Wayne Austin.

Cheeky Nugget finished pack in third ahead of We All Agree and Clay Pan Boogie.

Following the race, Cahill who was a last minute change to ride Foodie King admitted to Sky Thoroughbred Central, he received a fair bit of advice from Mulholland.

"Michael Mulholland told me to ride him a bit quieter," he said.

"He seems to finish off better.

"He just worked against me really because there wasn't a lot of tempo in the race.

"From the 600 [metre mark] I let him roll, Michael said to let him roll and he worked into it nicely.

"It worked nicely, probably they superior stay on the day."

Cahill also backed up his reasoning as to why he decided to stick to the middle of the track rather than the inside where the bulk of the field were battling.

"I think definitely worse towards the inside," he said.

"It'd be a seven or eight."

The opening race of the day was one by Richard Litt's Shaddy in a photo finish ahead of Danish Prince trained by Marc Conners.

Gilgandra's Kieran Hazelton's Chesty finished back in sixth place.
