With the local government elections delayed until December, mayor Stephen Lawrence put the wheels in motion for the recruitment to begin now.
Applications for the role opened on Friday and council plans to have everything finalised before caretaker mode on November 4.
"In light of the deferral of council elections, we feel it is now appropriate to commence the recruitment process for the CEO's role," Cr Lawrence said.

"This will guarantee stability and continuity for the organisation going into the new term of council."
The local government elections are planned for Saturday, December 4.
The selection panel for the new CEO will be comprised of Cr Lawrence, deputy mayor Anne Jones, councillor Jane Diffey and someone independent of council.
"We are proceeding with this recruitment process to ensure [council] has a new CEO within the 12 month time period council initially adopted when it brought Murray Wood on board as the interim CEO in June," Cr Lawrence said.
To allow Mr Wood to apply for the role, he has been removed from the recruitment process. The process will be handled by Local Government Management Solutions.
"I must commend the staff who work at council for their hard work over recent months; they have managed to continue delivering vital services for the community, and have kept up the pace despite a number of changes to leadership," Cr Lawrence said.
Applications for the CEO position will close on September 8. Interviews will start on September 20.
