The Public School's library was inhabited by some unwelcomed guests over the last few weeks; they have caused several thousands of dollars worth of damage to the school.

Dubbo Rotary Club president Carla Pittman said it was 'a no-brainer' for the organisation to get involved to help the school.

"I learnt of the schools predicament recently and I thought, 'well that's somewhere our rotary club can jump on board and help them get back to some form of normality once their furry enrolments have moved on' because it has been quite a hot topic I suppose over the last few months around especially," she said.

"I'm just not sure if people are aware of the extent of damage in the villages and communities that are probably a little bit closer to those farm areas as well, so after seeing the school and having a chat to them and being made aware of the amount of damage just in the library itself.

"I mean it was estimated to be over $5,000 damage in there just where [the mice had] eaten books and urinated on things, it was pretty ordinary situation."

The Rotary Club organised a Cupcakes for a Cause and Lamingtons for a Library event which ran at the Church Street Rotunda in Dubbo last Friday before the Geurie Markets over the weekend.

Ms Pittman said the days were a success.

"It went really really well actually, we had great support down at the rotunda on Friday with our cupcakes and lamingtons and we gave people the option to buy books," she said.

"They could choose one of the book titles that we had listed, which had been identified from the syllabus and through scholastic, so we had that there so people could a choose a title they would like to see in the library."

A spokesperson for the department of education said the school is one of many around the state receiving assistance for similar problems.

"The wellbeing of students and staff is our highest priority, which is why schools are receiving significant assistance and advice."
