Mr Hensley was without his hearing aid at the time and had been visiting Dubbo Hospital for what he thought would only be a quick checkup.
In the meantime, his best friend, a dog named Ruby who he takes with him everywhere, had been waiting in the car when Mr Hensley had an accident which resulted in him sustaining a broken hip.
Mr Hensley was hospitalised and told he would need to stay for eight days, but he had other priorities at mind; getting Ruby out of his car which he had left locked.
Mr Hensley had been finding it difficult to communicate with the staff but eventually the message was conveyed and a hospital social worker attempted to help release Ruby, but was unsuccessful.
In a desperate last attempt to free Ruby the social worked called the Dubbo Regional Council rangers for assistance.
The rangers free'd Ruby from the car and cared for her at the Dubbo City Animal Shelter, free-of-charge, for the whole eight days before the iconic pair was reunited.
Dubbo City Animal Shelter manager Kirra Larkin said they were more than happy to be able to assist.
"When Ruby first got here she was a little shy, but by the end of the week she was running around and excited to see us," she said.
"But it was nothing compared to how happy she was to see Lance again."
Miss Larkin said when the pair reunited it was quite the special moment.
"We were stoked to be able to make that happened, it was quite the special moment," she said.
According to staff Mr Hensley drove straight from the hospital to Ruby as soon as he was released.
