After atrocious river conditions set in for almost half a decade across the Murray Darling Basin, efforts continue to try and salvage native fish populations after the decimation of many inland stocks.
Huge local restocking efforts of around 50,000 cod from Dubbo to below Warren recently occurred, with 13,600 Murray Cod and 18,100 Yellowbelly now also being released into the Barwon river at Brewarrina, to try and get native fish thriving.

Over 100,000 fingerlings were also released between Brewarrina and Dunlop by the Bourke and Louth Fishing clubs. The Brewarrina fishing club called in all their members to release the fingerlings in their stretch, as funds from the annual Bre Big Fish competition were put towards the purchase of fingerlings to help re populate the river.
Thousands of Native Fish Stocked Into Turon River
NSW DPI has also reported that Native fish stocks in the Turon River, near the historic town of Sofala in central-western NSW, have been boosted following the release of thousands of Murray cod and golden perch fingerlings by dedicated volunteer anglers.
About 9000 cod and 6000 goldens were stocked into the river by members of the Sofala Fishing Club under DPI's Dollar-for-Dollar Native Fish Stocking Program.
This long running and highly popular program involves community groups, including fishing clubs, raising funds to stock native fish purchased from private hatcheries.
Equivalent funds are matched from the Recreational Fishing Trust.
Col Gordon, secretary of the Sofala branch of the Central Acclimatisation Society, said the cod and goldens stocked in the Turon were in excellent condition with the river flowing well after good rain.
