Lifeblood spokesperson Brian Bruce said fewer people tend to donate on public holidays and Australia Day is no exception.
"We know that many of our regular donors will be taking a well-earned break, and others may decide to take Monday off as well, giving themselves a four day weekend," he said.
"But the need for blood never stops. This Australia Day there will be people in hospital needing blood for cancer treatment, trauma, surgery, bleeding disorders and obstetrics. It's vital that Australians step up to ensure patients receive the blood they need."
"There is nothing more Australian than helping out a mate, and if you're able to help save the life of a complete stranger, that makes you a bloody legend," Mr Bruce said.
Mr Bruce said donating blood was simple.
"It only takes an an hour of your time and you are helping to save the lives of three fellow Australians. What better way to kick off the year and give back to your community?"
