Dubbo Show Society secretary Sue Hood is "confident" its 2020 New Year's Eve fireworks event will go ahead.

The show society is working with government departments to finalise its COVID-19 safety plan for the event.
"If it is not approved it won't happen," Mrs Hood said.
"But in saying that, they are trying to work with us and are helping us make sure it is right because they want it to happen too."

The show society took over the running of the fireworks in 2019.
Mrs Hood said 6029 people turned out to Dubbo Showground despite calls for the event to be cancelled because of heat and bushfires.
"It was excellent," she said.
"We put it together in a matter of three weeks.
"We'll be doing the same again this year by the looks of it."
