The library was formed in 1970. In the last 50 years it has expanded to include ten branches, catering to a population of nearly 70,000 and covering a service area of 25,000 square kilometres.
There have also been changes to the way the library operates.
Index cards and date stamps have been replaced with computer catalogues and library cards; Collections are more accessible because they are now electronic and available from home, as well as physical; Library visitors can enjoy convenient services such as online resources and innovative new programs like online author talks, coding and virtual reality.

"We are thrilled to be celebrating 50 years of service to our community. No other institution offers the same safe and inclusive public spaces with free and equal access to ideas, education and social engagement as the library," manager Kathryn McAlister said.
Dubbo mayor Ben Shields said the significant birthday was something to celebrate and five decades on, everyone should be extremely proud of the library.
"During the passage of time and significant changes in technology and the way people acquire and absorb their information, libraries still play a critical role in the community," he said.
To celebrate 50 years, the library is offering patrons the chance to win a free Love Your Library KeepCup.
To be in the draw for this prize, visit one of the library's ten branches or the website during November and complete an entry form.
