The week's fire occurred at Buninyong Public School just after 3pm Wednesday afternoon when an electrical fault sparked a blaze in the school's fire hydrant pump system.
While the fire did not cause a lot of visible damage, the Department of Education would not provided on details on whether the school's fire protection system had been compromised.
Fire and Rescue Dubbo Station Officer Steve Gilbert said the fire occurred in a diesel powered pump that assists with "fire protection systems around the school".
"There was a bit of smoke coming out of the cabinet and there was school staff on site and contractors so it was noticed straight away," he said.
Station Officer Gilbert said the pump was installed following a previous fire at the school in July 2016 which left six classrooms with significant damage.
He said the school did have fire protection following Wednesday's fire, but the Department was unable to confirm if it had been compromised.
"The incident was responded to with appropriate steps taken," the Department spokesman said.
"The Department is awaiting final details from Fire and Rescue NSW and will begin repairs as soon as possible."
