Michael McCormack visits Dubbo to announce event funding

The grant, awarded under the latest round of the Building Better Regions Fund, will allow council to deliver a research paper that will provide the framework for future events in the region.

The city is already looking at drawing big events such as an NRL match and a Great Southern Nights gig. But the funding will allow council to look at even more significant events.

Deputy Prime Minister Michael McCormack was in Dubbo on Friday to announce the funding.

"As one of the biggest regional centres in NSW, there is no reason Dubbo shouldn't play host to more major events," Mr McCormack said.

"This research paper is an important step in ensuring Dubbo is well-prepared to take advantage of future opportunities."

Mayor Ben Shields said the funding would help Dubbo with its goal to recover from the impacts of the long-lasting drought and COVID-19 pandemic.

"Whether it is sporting attractions like an NRL match, concerts, or exhibitions and displays, I want to see the Dubbo Region securing more events to enhance our reputation and help our economy grow," Cr Shields said.

The mayor wants the Dubbo region to be the fastest to recover from the pandemic.

Federal member for Parkes Mark Coulton said the BBRF was all about strengthening the local economy and delivering lasting benefits to communities such as Dubbo.

"Bringing more regional events to the area will be key to creating local jobs, boosting the local economy and growing confidence in Dubbo as a great place to live, work and invest," he said.

Mr Coulton said Dubbo was a key regional hub and the government needed to ensure it maximised every opportunity possible to bring economic stimulus to the area.

Cr Shields said he was grateful to the federal government, and Mr Coutlon, for the funding.

During his visit to Dubbo, Mr McCormack also attended a roundtable with Mr Coulton and members of The Exchange.
