Just after 6pm, firefighters received a triple-0 call to reports of a fire in a home on Mayne Street in Gulgong.

"Backed up by rehab 312 and pump 387 Mudgee crews made entry into the home finding the cause of the fire to be the chimney from the family's fireplace. We were able to stop the fire spreading within the roof space," Fire and Rescue NSW Gulgong firefighter Paul Cavalier said.

"Thankfully for the owners, only minimal damage was done to the house and they'll be able to return to the house this evening after everything gets checked out by a licensed electrician."

Firefighter Cavalier has urged people to take care this winter and to make sure the chimney on their fireplace has been cleaned out.

"You really don't want to be waiting out in the cold weather while we're putting your house fire out, trust us," he said

Meanwhile, winter is traditionally the busiest time for firefighters and there is usually an increase in fatalities related to house fires.

Firefighters said electric blankets, outdoor heaters and tumble driers are among their biggest concerns.
