Emergency services were called to Grawin Street at Cumborah, 45 kilometres south-west of Lightning Ridge, at 5am on Wednesday when neighbours reported a house on fire.
Fire and Rescue NSW and the NSW Rural Fire Service worked to extinguish the fire which had engulfed the single-storey pine-log building.
Officers attached to Central North Police District attended the scene but were unable able to access the building until about 1.30pm, when remains were found along with the bodies of three dogs.
Police are waiting on the results of a post-mortem examination to formally identify the remains as those of the 74-year-old woman, who lived alone in the home with her dogs.
The cause of the fire is yet to be determined.
