Station Captain Aaron Ferguson said six trucks from the Rural Fire Service and Delroy attended the fire near the Rawsonville Bridge road.
"Firefighters found bushland alight upon arrival, but we contained and then extinguished the fire after about an hour of work," he said.
Station Captain Ferguson said he was unsure if this fire was linked to the recent spate of deliberately lit fires around Dubbo.
"Fires on the side of a highway are uncommon. A cigarette butt may have ignited this one or a truck hitting the brakes too hard, something benign that has caused a spark," he said.
"We urge people to call the police if they did see anything suspicious in regards to this fire."
