Dubbo St John's Primary School student Vishaka Rupasinghe was one of the Year 5 district award winners.
The tests were held in August, with 280 Year 5 and 6 students sitting the 35-question exam paper at 335 primary schools.
Different to typical tests, the Newcastle Permanent Primary School Mathematics Competition challenges students to complete exams without using calculators, rulers or geometrical instruments.
Mr O'Leary said he is exceptionally proud of his students and believes their results are thanks to the school's STEM program, a curriculum based on the idea of educating students in four specific disciplines - science, technology, engineering and mathematics - in an interdisciplinary and applied approach.
Year five student Sophie Egan said she enjoyed the test.
"I think maths is enjoyable because there are lots of problems to solve," she said.
"I really enjoyed this test and hope to do it again next year."
