A 34-year-old man is in an induced coma in Sydney hospital after he was allegedly assaulted in Cobar on Saturday night.

Police were called to a licensed premises on Marshall Street at about 11.40pm Saturday after a man was reportedly assaulted.
The injured man was allegedly punched, fell backwards, hit his head heavily on the pavement and was rendered unconscious.

Paramedics attended, he was taken to Cobar Hospital with severe head injuries and transferred to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in a critical condition.
About 8.15am on Sunday, a 27-year-old man was arrested after he presented himself at Cobar Police Station.
He was charged with recklessly causing grievous bodily harm and was refused bail.
The man appeared in Bourke Local Court on Monday and did not apply for bail.
He is next due to appear in court on September 19.
