The champion jockey rode in the day's first two events without a win before illness forced him to give up the rest of his bookings for the day.
Rachael Murray took one of those rides and made the most of it, saluting with the Clint Lundholm-trained Mum's The Word in the Narromine Newsagency Class 3 Handicap (1100m).
Murray's ride was one Ryan would have been proud of as Mum's The Word stalked the leaders before taking the lead at the top of straight and going on to win by one-and-a-half lengths.
"She gives her all and we're pleased," Lundholm said of his mare to Sky Thoroughbred Central.
"Rachael rode her terrific and I bet any money Greg is kicking the dirt at home. He must be crook if he's getting off them but it was great."
RELATED:
Mum's The Word was originally an emergency for the race but after a number of scratchings she earned a start.
Barrier 10 provided a challenge but Murray got a dream jump and moved across to settle fourth on the rails while the Mark Jones-trained pair of Phenomenal Spirit ($13) and Pip's Pick ($2.80 favourite) set the pace.
Jones' pair continued to lead the way, along with Algeroba, and a four-length gap quickly formed between that leading trio and the fourth-placed Mum's The Word ($3.60).
The Gayna Williams-trained Griffin's Gaze ($5.50) started to surge while Murray bided her time with the front-runners setting a handy pace up front.
Mum's The Word moved a little wider as the field rounded the bend for home and Murray settled in the middle of the track before moving her way forward.
She quickly kicked forward and took the lead from Phenomenal Spirit, who was running a fine race out in front.
Those two and Pip's Pack battled for the lead but the consistent Mum's The Word soon kicked clear to score a fopurth win from 22 starts.
The victory came in the five-year-old's 13th start this preparation.
"She's not going for a spell," Lundholm laughed.
"She keeps winning and while she's going well we'll keep her going."
