The Fishies were missing a host of regulars - most notable Jyie Chapman, Alex Bonham and Luke Jenkins - while Powyer himself and a number of others played limited minutes.

The rotation and timing of the match meant it wasn't the most free-flowing contest but the Fishies were still a class above and ran out 38-12 winners over the Ron Massey Cup side at Apex Oval.

The Wolves were missing a host of regulars themselves, but were behind for almost the entire match after a Billy Sing break lead to a Hamish Astill try in the opening set of the match.

The result was satisfying but the most pleasing aspect for Powyer was getting to see even more of his squad's players push for a spot in the top 17.

"The more games we play early on the better look I get at everyone," the captain-coach said post game.

"We're lucky to have this depth and quality and I need these three games at least to have a look at everyone."

Powyer didn't single out any the players who came into the side as standouts but admitted each of them did the job he expected.

The new halves combination of Tom Yeo and Harry Kempston guided the side around while Hamish Astill impressed again at hooker.

Jayden Merritt made his first start after switching from Macquarie while Hayden Chapman, Corey Dennis, Nacewa Nalagi, and Nick Karydis all got decent minutes.

"It's going to be a nightmare to think about putting 25 into 17," Powyer said.

"The depth there is quality depth. If we were to get beaten today I wouldn't have said it was because we were missing those blokes. I'm confident in the blokes we put in and they did a quality job.

"Everyone is giving me something to think about."

As well as no Chapman and Jenkins, CYMS were also missing Western Rams under 23s pair Wade Kavanagh and John Ciappara on Sunday.

Given the time of year, the match was played in 20 minute quarters and the opening stanza completely belonged to CYMS.

After Astill's opener it didn't take long for the hosts to cross again, with Viliame Turuva beating a number of defenders on his way scoring after a simple shift to the left.

A strong run and offload from the hard-working Alex Ronayne led to Brad Pickering grabbing his side's third as CYMS ended the first quarter up by 18.

The lead stretched to 24-6 by half-time and while the standard of play dropped and players were rotated more in the second half the Fishies remained in control and went on to win by 18-point winners.

Corey Drew created a highlight when he sprinted 95m following an intercept to score while Corey Cox planted the ball down off a neat Kempston grubber in the game's final try.

"We came out pretty ramped up and I was making plenty of changes throughout so when the intensity died a lot of that was because of me," Powyer said.

"It wasn't the most impressive game in terms of attacking and being clean but I haven't mentioned that at all to them. We just focused on showing up in defence and working for each other.

"The boys worked hard and I'm happy."

CYMS will play in the semi-final next weekend with the location and opposition to be announced early in the week.

The Challenge Cup final is set down for the June long weekend.
