Blue-green algae has also been found at Collarenbri and Brewarrina on the Barwon River, which are also on amber alert, while a red alert is in place at Louth, Trevallyn, and Wilcannia on the Darling River.
Bourke Shire Council said the presence of blue-green algae in the river posed no immediate threat to the quality of the potable filtered water supply servicing the town of Bourke. Council said the treatment process currently in place would remove any potential threat.
ALSO MAKING NEWS:
However, Bourke has a dual reticulated water system which means some water is pumped directly from the river to garden taps in the township, known as ‘raw water’, that has not been treated.
Residents are urged to find alternate water supplies for their pets and to avoid letting children play in water from garden taps. The water should be suitable for garden purposes, however avoid spraying the water directly on to editable fruits.
Stock managers are advised to seek alternate water supplies in amber and red alert areas. Stock managers should be on the lookout for algae scums in standing water holes.
