Held every two years, the championships pit teams from across the state against one another in 15 events simulating real-world scenarios, from climbing ladders to staged rescues.
Fire and Rescue NSW regional events coordinator Mark Rutter urged people to watch – and cheer on the highly-favoured local team – from Thursday.
“Every event relates to something the firefighters would do on the fire ground,” he said.
“For our first five events we use the tower, the ladders, so basically the different events on the tower are from taking hoses up there and squirting at targets on the top of the tower right down to, the simplest event which is pure and simply a race up the ladder to see who can be the fastest.
“Most of the teams … put a lot of work and effort into training after hours in order to get here.
“They’ll see the best firefighters in NSW battling it out … so great to come down and watch for the general public just to have a look.”
Emergency services agencies including NSW Police, the State Emergency Service, Rural Fire Service and Volunteer Rescue Association will host interactive displays from 5pm, before a torchlight parade from Victoria Park back to Ollie Robbins Oval at 5pm.
There will be a fireworks from 8.30pm, and there will also be face painting and a jumping castle on offer.
The State Firefighter Championships wrap up on Saturday, October 27.
