McGregor contested three Olympic games and captained the Australian Stingers at London 2012, and now resides in Dubbo.
The Dubbo club has grown to have 50 regular players since McGregor helped establish it two years ago, and he hopes to involve even more locals with the club hosting a registration night on Tuesday, October 16.
“I honestly enjoyed every session I ever had with water polo and most people I know that play, they just really enjoy it,” McGregor said.
“I always played for the love of it so come along, give it a try and see if you love it too.”

The club runs both junior and senior competitions, with the first eight-week round robins getting underway on October 30. A second competition will begin after Christmas.
But this year the club also hopes to empower more players to compete further abroad.
“We probably won’t necessarily have enough kids of the same age to make up a team, but certainly there are plenty of opportunities across the western area for us to take a bunch of kids, join a bunch of kids from say Tamworth or Orange or Bathurst, amalgamate them into a team and play in some of the regional competitions and that is the goal this year for the younger age group,” McGregor said.
“The adults have the opportunity to join teams as well any time they like – I guess it’s more up to the adults if that’s something they’d like to do.
“At the second half of the season [after Christmas], if we seem to get interest, then we might introduce a training session once a week on top of the games just to get a few more next level skills for them to take with them if they go to a competition.”
McGregor said water polo was a terrific sport for anyone that enjoyed swimming but was keen for a social activity.
“Swimming is a basic skill of water polo so if you’re a half decent swimmer but you don’t want to pursue swimming … it’s a great sport you can play for the rest of your life.”
The registration night will run from 5pm until 6pm on Tuesday, October 16 at the Dubbo Aquatic Leisure Centre.
People are reminded that alternative traffic and parking arrangements will be in place on Tuesday, due to the royal visit.
The come-and-try night starts at 5.30pm on Tuesday, October 23 before the season itself gets underway on October 30.
