Rugby cricket club president Steven Wheeler said the club had lost some firepower from last seasons premiership-winning squad, but it was aiming to go back-to-back in 2018/19.
“We have lost Jordan Moran who scored 214 not out for us in the grand final and Ben Patterson who is now playing for Newtown and also James O’Brien, so we have three of the best cricketers in NSW country out of our team, but we are reasonably confident that the nucleus of last years side and the young players we have brought up can do the job,” he said.
“We are in it to win it; we have plenty of talent through our list, and we have a well-balanced bowling attack.
“I think we have the best leg spinner in NSW country cricket with Adrian Carey who creates a bit of havoc at this level, he is an outstanding leg-spinner, plus two off-spinners in Ben Taylor and Aidan Bennewith, so we feel we have a very balanced bowling attack. We will lose some raw pace but we will just plug away with our medium pacers and our spinners.”
Mr Wheeler said the club should see growth from the young players they have blooded over the past few seasons.
“Our Captain Nathan Munro will step up this summer and lead from the front, “ he said
“Ben Wheeler, Campbell Rose and Baye Wallace, the young guys we blooded three years ago, this season we should see some reward from them as they have improved each season we’ve seen from them, we expect that they will fill the hole left by the players who departed the club.
“Keep an eye on Jacob Hill, he can hold a cricket bat and we should see some runs from him.”
The president said he is quietly confident that if the side takes opportunities in key moments of matches they will have a successful summer.
“If we hold our catches, score off the bad balls, put pressure on batsmen by taking wickets, we are in with a chance to win any game, we are a very competitive side and that’ll hold us in good stead,” Mr Wheeler said.
“We are always looking to win; if we all chip in and play as a team we’ll have a competitive season.”
