Bradley John Olek faced Judge Stephen Walmsley in Dubbo District Court yesterday on two charges of indecent assault with person aged under 10, two charges of sexual intercourse with person aged under 10 and one charge of incite person aged under 10 to commit indecent act.
The court heard the charges were related to incidents which occurred over a period of time in the late 1990s and the year 2000.
Olek told the court in evidence that he had been a heavy user of alcohol, cannabis and speed during that timeframe, occasionally mixing the two narcotics together and smoking that as well.
There was also evidence put forward that he didn’t fully remember all of the incidents
The court heard a girl who was aged about six at the time was the victim of three of the matters.
Twice he warned the girl not to tell her mother and on one occasion offered her $2 to stay silent.
The other two matters related to incidents involving a young boy.
Both victims reported the incidents to authorities a number of years after they occurred.
Evidence was given showing Olek, who is under protection at prison, had extreme remorse for his actions including apologising to the female victim during a telephone conversation arranged by police last year.
“I feel bad for what I have done to their family and to my family,” he said.
“I’m extremely sorry. I’ve cost these people their future and I’m sorry I allowed that to happen.
“I am not taking drugs anymore and I feel a lot better and don’t want to fall back into that stuff.”
Judge Walmsley told the court he believed Olek’s remorse was sincere and was hopeful he would have the opportunity for treatment within the prison system.
He sentenced Olek to a total of four-and-a-half years in prison with a non-parole period of two-and-a-half years.
The sentence was backdated to December 2 of last year when Olek was taken into custody and he will be eligible for release on June 1, 2012.
