The Roosters gave the former NSW Country representative a fitting farewell at their home ground Tom Knight Oval last Friday with a spirited 34-24 win over the Nyngan Tigers - but it was just their second victory of the 2009 Tooheys New Group 11 season.
Ford is not expecting miracles from his troops this weekend when his last placed Roosters take on expectant minor premiers CYMS in the last round of competition.
“I’m hoping we can get two sides on the field, anything more will be a bonus,” Ford said.
“It’s been a very long season.
“Last week’s win was good for us. We’ve battled long and hard all year but the boys keep showing up and I was proud as punch.
“It gives the boys something to be happy about it. This weekend we will look to go down there and have a bit of fun.”
After a four-year stint in Cobar which included a Tooheys New Group 11 premiership in 2006, Ford and his pregnant wife are looking to move closer to his in-laws on the Central Coast.
“My time in Cobar has been great,” said Ford, who came to Cobar from Jim Beam Cup side Erina Eagles.
“It’s a lot different to the coast but I’m very glad we came out and it’s sad to be leaving.
“Unfortunately Cobar is not two hours from the coast, otherwise we would never leave.
“The truth is the strength of rugby league in Cobar relies heavily on the economy. At the moment we can’t offer blokes jobs to entice them out there.
“But hopefully the guys continue to turn up because there are some good juniors coming through and if they stick around Cobar will be competitive in the future.”
The game has been scheduled for Saturday afternoon at Apex Oval, with under-18s to start at 2pm, to fit in with the Birth of Origin Beetson and Raudonikis Show on Saturday night.
The Dubbo CYMS Old Boys fundraiser will be held at the Dubbo RSL Memorial Club from 7pm.
Tickets are still available for $55 from the RSL Club reception and bookings are essential.
The two rugby league legends were the respective Queensland and New South Wales captains in the first State of Origin and will be talking about their experiences in the game and how the game has changed.
