A special eucharist was held at St Martin’s Church in Hawksburn, Victoria yesterday to bless its new Mother Superior, the Reverend Sister Linda Mary of the Community of the Sisters of the Church (CSC).
The Rev Sr Linda Mary was born in Dubbo and spent her childhood days in the city.
She attended Dubbo South Primary School and Dubbo High School before embarking on a teaching career.
Now she will officially take the reins of the international Anglican religious community.
The Rev Sr Linda Mary was supported by her parents, Noel and Betty Shuttle, who travelled down from Dubbo to celebrate the occasion with their daughter.
Sister Linda Mary is the first Mother Superior in the order’s 140-year history who has chosen not to reside in England.
Instead, she will continue to fulfil this ministry from Australia.
Head of St Michael’s Grammar School Simon Gipson recognises the significance of this appointment.
“St Michael’s owes its existence to the Community of the Sisters of the Church. We look forward to supporting Sister Linda Mary in her new appointment, just as the Sisters have supported us in the past and continue to support us with their prayers,” he said.
Emily Ayckbowm founded the Community of the Sisters of the Church in 1870.
It pioneered works in Christian education, child care, social welfare and mission work.
The Rev Sr Linda Mary is often asked to preach and bless at various places across Australia and internationally.
