There was a great mixture of young and old and males and females and of these nearly half were first-timers.
The large number of females was a particularly pleasing aspect with first timers Meagan Campan, Paige Williams, Juli-anne Burnton, Sally Atkinson, Angela Croker and Michelle Ryan all taking on the short course, a 500m swim, 9km bike ride and 2.5km run format. Ryan led the women home in a smart time of 54 minutes 35 seconds in her first triathlon.
The race also featured the return of long-time member Joy Downs who initially was only going to do the swim and bike ride of the short course. In the long course Bronwyn Powell was the leading woman in a personal best time of 71:10 minutes. She looks in good form for her attempt on the Nepean Triathlon in a couple of weeks.
Teams events were also popular at Sunday’s Dubbo Triathlon Club season opener with several taking to the course.
The Morrison Family Eye Care Clinic was well represented with Sally Ann Morrison, Rod Morrison and Steffen Frandsen the leading team in the short course.
Meanwhile the team of Karin Morgan and Kym Sawtell were the leading team in the long-course section.
The long-course event for males also had several first timers to triathlon in action.
Andrew Hurrell, Matt Tickle, Josh Strahorn, Rob Armstrong, Nathan Royan, Adrian Mitchell and Tristan Barnes put in very commendable performances in their first triathlons.
Being the first race of the year there were also some notable achievements from several existing members with Mick Broomfield, Clint Meyers, Matt Coolan and Mark McKenna racing to personal bests, McKenna’s by four minutes.
Meyers beat all-comers in the run with a course record of 14:36 for the leg and finished sixth overall.
Overall honours went to club president Craig May in a time of 54:51 just in front of Matt Pellow in 54:57. Pellow’s effort was particularly commendable given he is in the middle of HSC exams.
Third was CSU student Daniel Gorman in a time of 56.07. Gorman had the fastest swim time of the day of eight minutes 11 seconds in a slow-flowing Macquarie River.
For his efforts he took home a free massage courtesy of Graeme Peadon at Bodyworks Massage.
Meanwhile Mick Broomfield was fourth just behind Gorman despite completing a 130km bike ride the day before the race.
The performances of youngsters Tom Kotzur (12) and Joe Evans (14) was also pleasing. Results are available to all competitors on www.dubbotriathlonclub.com.au.
