Local Dubbo anglers have adapted their techniques to make the most of the low water levels currently being experienced on what is hopefully the back end of one of Australia’s most harsh and unforgiving droughts.

Reg Oldfield has reported a hot streak of Murray Cod fishing, and has been donning a pair of waders and braving the plummeting temperatures to access some of the deeper runs and holes on the Macquarie River.
Reg dropped Dubbo Catches a great report and photos this week and for his efforts he receives a Jaz Lures Prize pack, which includes a Syclone 70 lipless crank bait and a half ounce 2/0 spinner bait in the ever faithful purple and white skirt.
Daryl Williams, visiting the district from Queensland, also managed to spin up a plump cod mid morning on Wednesday near a local weir. A bright yellow hard-bodied lure did the damage.
Darling River:
Chris McKeown, Bill Larson, John Ravot, and Steve Pearson recently enjoyed a few days of ‘R and R’ on the banks of the Darling River, and managed to catch a swag of yellow belly between 40cm and 50cm in the process.
Fishing just out past Brewarrina, Chris reported that the yellowbelly were feeding actively and the deeper holes provided plenty of fishing action.
Yabbies out-fished lures and all other forms of bait by far, with some anglers managing to beach three fish in as many minutes.
For his report and photos, Chris also picks up a selection of Jaz Lures.
Garden Hotel Fishing Club:
The Garden Hotel Fishing Club will be going on a trip to Burrendong Dam over the coming weekend. Members of the public are more than welcome to attend, and it is shaping up to be a great weekend.
Those wanting to travel out should meet at the Garden Hotel at 9.30am on Saturday June 28 or at Burrendong later in the day. Cabins have been booked to cater for ladies, and campers are also welcome.
With the fishing at Burrendong being nothing short of superb in recent times you could just about guarantee a top weekend will be enjoyed by all, and as they say in the Garden hotel Fishing Club: “There’s more to fishing than fishing …”
Awonga and Monduran:
Both Awonga and Monduran are producing barra for those who have the luxury of time, as persistence is really paying off.
Stealth mode again is the way to go as anglers in kayaks who opt to cast and troll large “squidgies” have been bringing home the bacon time-and-time again.
Fishing news:
Woody snags that improve fish habitat have been introduced to the Castlereagh River Demonstration Reach downstream of Coonabarabran.
With the co-operation of local landholders and contractors, large woody debris has been sourced from legal land clearing, and placed in the river to provide habitat for numerous forms of aquatic life.
Removal of snags from NSW rivers has been listed as a key threatening process under the Fisheries Management Act 1994 because of its negative impacts on several threatened or vulnerable species.
Resnagging works require approval from the NSW DPI Aquatic Habitat Protection Unit and the Department of Lands, so be sure to give them a call if you are interested in being involved in the program.
Anyone interested in further information about the Upper Castlereagh Demonstration Reach Project should contact Shaun Morris (Conservation Management Officer - NSW DPI) on 6881 1270.
TV fishing:
Fishing Australia hosted an episode from picturesque Tathra on the far South Coast of NSW.
The local fishos of the region absolutely love their fishing, and showed us how they paddle out baits from their local wharf on surf boards in the hope of catching kingies and tuna.
Australian Salmon fishing was also in full swing off the rocks, with Slam bait, soft baits, Yakkas, soft plastics and a burley trail of pilchards assuring that there would be plenty of activity at the cleaning tables after the session.
The Okuma team also fished Brogo Dam which has been stocked with over 250,000 Australian Bass over the past few years.
Brogo Bass have an endless supply of mudeyes, shrimp, and minnows to feed on, so it is hoped that they will grow rapidly over the coming years.
Casting large profiled deep diving minnows from a Hobie kayak proved to be a very productive approach to Brogo Bass fishing, as the silent and stealthy approach of the pedal mirage drive put the anglers in the strike zone with the fish being none the wiser.
