And really, the way he received his award was sort of perfect.
The recipient of the Dubbo City Tony McGrane Community Service Award appeared via a live internet link yesterday to receive his award at the Dubbo Day community service awards.
Mr Foley and his team have spent years working on technologies to create videoconferencing for rural students, and this year he has also created a link between Dubbo and NASA, using the videoconferencing so students can take virtual tours of NASA’s museum.
“Our work is not so obvious,” Mr Foley said via the Skype hook-up from a spot outside Houston. “We’re more the back of house team, making a robust conduit for people like Paul Woodhead.”
Mr Woodhead was last year’s recipient of the Tony McGrane Award for his work with the circus program in Dubbo’s schools
“We allow children to live and learn and fill the bush with small schools,” Mr Foley said. “Nowadays an only child in the bush has 60 courses from school and TAFE to chose from - and a classroom to join.”
