A 46-year-old Dubbo man was taken to Dubbo Base Hospital yesterday after the white Ford Falcon station wagon he was driving collided with a brown Ford Laser travelling in the opposite direction.
The names of the men involved have not yet been released and police have not confirmed where the 24-year-old man was from.
Details of how the tragic incident occurred are still under investigation but police said speed could be a factor.
“Police got the call to attend at 9.15am,” Orana Local Area Command acting crime manager Detective Sergeant Mark Meredith said.
“At this point in the investigation it seems evident that speed and the manner of driving may have contributed to the incident.
“A brief of evidence is being prepared for the coroner.”
The incident occurred about 43 kilometres outside of Dubbo on the Mendooran road, a few kilometres away from the site of another tragedy marked by crosses hanging on a tree at the side of the road.
The site was littered with debris yesterday and the police had the road blocked for several hours.
Media were kept about one kilometre away from the scene for up to two hours.
Dubbo and Mendooran Rescue Squad personnel were both called to the scene, along with NSW Ambulance which reported the driver of the station wagon had suffered “spinal and chest injuries”.
Forensic specialists arrived after emergency services to examine the scene.
