Allan Backhouse has little doubt that the Police and Community Youth Club junior league club will be competing next season after tonight's annual meeting. The first attempt to get an executive together wasn't successful, but Allan suggests that won't be the problem tonight. "Certainly we didn't get off the ground at our first meeting but that doesn't say we won't be competing," he said. "I was concerned to read that the Dubbo junior league had concerns about our viability in 2005, but after Wednesday those concerns will disappear. Police Boys are one of the founding clubs in the junior league and we won't just walk away from the game. We have staff here at the club to look after registrations and make sure that we are ready to start the season." Allan urged all parents and family to support tonight's meeting that will be held at the PCYC at 6pm. "I can't see why we won't have teams in all grades from under-8s through to 16s," he said.

The Dubbo Demons, youth workers and Central West Australian Rules officials will meet with executive officers from the NSW AFL in Dubbo tomorrow morning. Mick Woodbridge yesterday confirmed the breakfast meeting would have Demons president Mick Haley and vice president Joe Knagge joined by Terry Doolan from the Gordon Centre in West Dubbo. Youth officers Willie Middleton Snr and Colin Fuller will also be there along with CWAFL president Richard Ivey.
"We have plans to spread the game into West Dubbo and the NSW officials are keen to hear what we have in the pipeline and to see if they can help," Mick Woodbridge said. "The NSW people are also here to talk about our junior development program and Auskick as well as our successful pre-season carnival that is growing in stature each year."

The Demons should be complimented for their initiative to have the youth of West Dubbo involved in their code. For many years the late Lorni Hyland and son Hanlon have encouraged Koori kids to play Aussie Rules and some have been quite successful. With the support of the NSW and Central West leagues and others, the new program should be just as successful.

The Dubbo Demons are keen to see their club expand past the footy field. Already the club has two basketball teams involved in Sports World competitions and according to Mick Woodbridge, they have other sports under the spotlight. "We want to make the Demons a sporting club that will cater for all sporting codes," he said. "If we can provide our members with opportunities to play basketball and netball, then we will look into it. Our two basketball teams are going quite well and hopefully we have at least one team in the netball next year." Already the Dubbo Kangaroos Rugby Club has gone into other sports with its netball team winning the A grade competition last season.

Dubbo trainers Garth Hoy, Bruce McKinnon and Barry Lew will make their first serious attack on prize money at the Bathurst TAB trot meeting tonight. I will be keen to see how Rebelle runs for Garth while Koloura Doc is racing well for Bruce. Unfortunately Barry's 28-day suspension at Harold Park on Friday forces him to vacate the seat behind Karloo Sterling. At the weekend Barry indicated that his brother Mick would take the drive tonight. Nine races are on the card starting at 6.40pm.

Newtown and Souths cricketers are invited to be at No 1 Oval on Friday night for a Christmas drink. On the pitch, the two clubs will clash in the Amaroo Cup limited overs series and players and friends from both clubs are invited to watch the game in the comfort of the clubhouse. Newtown's Greg Briggs said in the past such nights had been successful and given good weather it should be a similar situation again on Friday.

Peter Stevenson was a first-time winner of the Dubbo RSL Snooker Club secret ball competition on Friday night. Peter played impressive snooker throughout the night and made his mark early when he eliminated John Gleeson and Jim Lang before coming up against Michael Russell in the final. Peter sank the ball that mattered and is no doubt keen to give it another go this week. The minor prizes were taken out by Tom Whelan and Jim Lang.
