At 10.50pm on Monday Tasmania Police responded to reports of an armed person at the Diana's Basin campsite near St Helens.
"Upon arrival, police were approached by a woman brandishing a machete. The woman was sprayed with capsicum spray and went into nearby bushland," police said in a statement.
The area was cordoned off for several hours and several campsites were evacuated.
