Mr Williams writes books on Australian folklore. His previous book was called Australian Big Cats - An Un-Natural History of Panthers.

But this time, it's all about the Min Min lights.

"The term is Aboriginal. We think they are a form of earth-created energy possibly associated with the geology/topography of the region. The generalised term for them is 'earth lights'," Mr Williams said.

Mr Williams said there were recordings of the lights seen all around the world. However in different areas they're called different things - will-o'wisps, ghost lights, ignis fatuus.

"I became aware of lights in this region about nine years ago," Mr Williams said.

"I was visiting friends at Dunedoo and they had started to tell me about reports they were aware of and experiences that had themselves. When I was recently talking to a friend of mine who is a scientist, he mentioned that he had spoken to farmers who had some great sightings that were in the mid-1990s."

He's heard a variety of stories about the Min Min lights in Dubbo and surrounding areas.

"Lights approaching cars as well as appearing on the top of fence posts. Small calibre guns being fired at the light which had no effect. When a larger calibre was fired the light vanished. The same light had been annoying horses but had little effect on cattle," Mr Williams said.

"I have interviewed drovers who admitted extreme distress when the light approached their car."

The author says he loves mysteries and the lights "are all of that and more".

One of the main mysteries is how the lights are formed initially, and how they can stay in circular like shapes for long periods of time.

Mr Williams said studies by geologists like Paul Deveraux in the United Kingdom found some correlations with the lights and fault lines.

Mr Williams spent a week in the area speaking to people about what they've seen.He plans to return in early 2022.

He would love to hear from anyone who has had experiences with strange lights.

"I am especially after any farms or locations where the owners are seeing unusual lights on a semi-regular basis," Mr Williams said.
