That is according to a report from federal parliament's foreign affairs, defence and trade committee which has found told forced and child marriage remains prevalent in Australia.

The Australian Federal Police told a committee inquiry of 74 reports of forced marriage this year to June, likely a reduction in numbers due to COVID-19 restrictions.

It also said women aged 15 to 19 were most vulnerable, while 51 per cent of forced marriage victims were aged 18 or less and 70 per cent related to offshore marriages.

Human rights sub-committee chair Kevin Andrews said work remained to be done to stamp out the practice.

"The committee has heard through contributions to its inquiry that open community dialogue, education and women's empowerment can shift social norms and create environments that discourage the practice," he said.

"Through this inquiry, the committee learnt of the work undertaken by the Australian government on child and forced marriage in recent years, situated as it is among broader human trafficking and modern slavery issues."

The report made nine recommendations, including improving forced marriage data collection within Australia and how it is shared with non-government organisations.

It also said Australia's aid program should support initiatives specifically tackling forced marriage and back efforts to lift education outcomes for women and girls, particularly in locations with high rates.

Some countries with high forced marriage rates have no Australian diplomatic representation.

The committee found Australia was a leading regional and global force in fighting forced marriage, but urged the government to continue with targeted advocacy in the area.
