CYMS captain Ben Knaggs wanted his side to improve before the match and while the Cougars got the job done there is still more than can be done says batsman Tom Nelson.

"It was pretty average from us I think," he said.

"It's good to get a win but I think we let the game roll on in the middle period.

"We had our foot on the throat and kind of let them up a bit.

"In saying that I think our bowlers bowled well and we fielded pretty well to be fair."

Batting first Rugby was on the back foot early as Bailey Edmunds removed Ben Wheeler with the second ball of the game for 0 before Ben Patterson chimed in with the wicket of Darcy Chewings with his first ball to have the score at 2/0.

Rugby skipper Jacob Hill dug in to make 39 before he was removed by Knaggs who went on to take 4/25 from his eight overs.

Nelson believes Knaggs' bowling performance was a real captain's knock.

"He bowled exceptional," he said.

"I think all our quicks bowled well. I don't think too many people bowled bad spells.

"I think 'Patto' [Ben Patterson] and 'Buzz' [Bailey Edmunds] bowled well upfront.

"Then Knaggs and Brock [Larance] bowled well. Even Paddy [Nelson] and Benny [Ben O'Donnell] bowled good."

O'Donnell took the ball late in the innings and Nelson feels the Cougars veteran was among their best on Saturday.

"He normally takes the new ball for us," he said.

"But I thought he was exceptional with the older ball late in the innings.

"It kind of looked like it could blow out at the end to about 160 but it was good to restrict them to what we did."

Rugby made their way to 108 thanks to some late hitting from Jakke Gardiner (22) but it wasn't enough.

CYMS opener Brock Larance looked in ominous touch exploding for a 15-ball knock off 34 before Gardiner had him trapped in front LBW.

Tom Coady (10), Nelson (2) and Patterson (4) came and went to give Rugby a chance of victory before Tom Barber and Angus Norton combined to steer the ship and guide the Cougars home.

Norton finished with 20 not out while Barber made 18 not out to guide the Cougars home in 17^th over.

"Our top order probably didn't do as much as we should've," Nelson said.

"I think 'Barbs' [Tom Barber] batted well in the middle.

"He and 'Norto' [Angus Norton] got us home in the end.

"In the end, we a probably not producing up the top as much as we'd like to."

Meanwhile, Macquarie have held on for a nail-biting victory over Newtown in their RSL Whitney Cup match at Lady Cutler 2.

Batting first, Macquarie made 148 thanks in large to Hugh Sienkiewicz (36) and Ben Strachan (29) while Newtown spinner Shubham Sharma took an economical 4/8 off just four overs.

However, with the ball, it was Strachan's brother Lachlan who fired the most taking 4/33 while Blake Smith (2/27) and youngster Will Skinner (3/3) were also outstanding as Newtown were bowled out for 130.

Meanwhile, at No.2 Oval, Chris Morton continued his outrageous form in RSL Colts' victory over South Dubbo.

Tom Byrnes made 30 for Souths as they finished with a very respectable 9/141 from their 40 overs with RSL Colts' Ben Semmler (2/9) the pick of the bowlers.

Opening the batting, Morton exploded hitting 11 fours and three massive sixes on his way 74 not out off just 33 balls as RSL Colts chased down the total in just 13 overs.
