Mr Mahon may be best known as one of the directors of Midwest Food and Liquor in Dubbo but said he has kept a keen eye on Dubbo Regional Council in the last two years especially.
"I guess it's something I've been sitting back and watching with interest the development in the last 18 months on council," he said.
"Dubbo deserves better than to have a council that is continually in the headlines for all the wrong reasons when there are many positive things happening in the region.
"I just hope I can bring my experience from involvement in company boards that operate businesses both on a local and national level combined with being part of this wonderful community for 30-odd years."
While Mr Mahon will be running as a candidate for election in the east ward of Dubbo, he hopes those who are elected focus on issues across the whole local government area.
"I think anybody who gets elected in council whilst they are elected from a ward system they are there to represent all the people of Dubbo and the region with the decisions we are making," he said
"It's a big picture view that is needed."

With Dubbo constantly expanding, Mr Mahon believes businesses in the town should look to take advantage of upcoming opportunities.
"Dubbo is just an absolute mecca for light industry and small to medium enterprises that support the entire north-west of NSW," he said.
"It's quite unique in that way and along with the rural sector and tourism options makes the Dubbo Region the vibrant business hub it is today.
"There are opportunities coming up for the Dubbo Region with all of the private and public sector investments and infrastructure programs the local businesses can take participate in.
"Hopefully [they] gain their share of that however a growing concern is being able to employ people as many business are experiencing a severe shortage of candidates for jobs they are advertising."
Commitment, integrity and vision are the three keywords Mr Mahon is sticking by during his campaign while he hopes the newly elected or businesses councillors can help move the LGA forward.
"A commitment to make sure we go forward and work as a cohesive body to represent the community with appropriate levels of consultation and transparency in the decision-making process," he said.
"We've got to support the chief executive officer and the team at council to deliver results.
"They are the actual experts or they work with the experts in various fields."
Mr Mahon also believes the council can be effective in working away from the spotlight.
"I think the councillors are elected as caretakers of the region so it's our job to do that on behalf of the electorate," he said.
"People shouldn't be on there for personal or professional gain.
"We don't need rockstars on the council, to me an effective council will be working away in the background getting the job done without all the headlines."
