He said Monday's announcement that a man in his 50s had died in Dubbo due to COVID-19 was a "significant reminder" of the dangers the virus was presenting to the community.
"Please take that opportunity to get vaccinated while you can, look after your family and the rest of your community," Assistant Commissioner McKechnie said.
"We really do need people to be compliant. Stay at home, stay where you are, lock yourself down."
The Assistant Commissioner said it was still a small group of people in communities across the region "intent on not following the rules" and urged anyone who might have influence over these people to start talking to them.
"We really do need our leaders in the community, our influencers to help us where you can and try and talk to these people," he said.
"Particularly our young people and try and reinforce the seriousness of this situation."
People are also being reminded by police it is mandatory to wear a face mask when outside your home, or it's a $500 fine if you are caught not wearing it.
"It's such a basic protective device at the moment," Assistant Commissioner McKechnie said.
"To think that anyone would be outside their home doing something around other people not wearing a mask is again mind boggling."
NSW Police are continuing operation Stay at Home, alongside the Australian Defence Force to ensure people are abiding to the public health orders.
The operation includes wellbeing checks across the community, and the delivering of hampers to some of the town's most vulnerable.
