Western NSW Police Commander, Assistant Commissioner Geoff McKechnie said in the past day, as part of operation Stay at Home, police had issued over 80 infringements across the western region to those not adhering to the public health orders.
In Dubbo alone, 32 were issued to people moving around the city without a reasonable excuse.
"There's not a lot of discretion available to us anymore, we've given out a lot of warnings and now were writing out infringement notices to people for $3000, just because they simply can't follow some very basic requirements of keeping themselves, their families and communities safe," Assistant Commissioner McKechnie said.
He said every available police officer in the western region was working, focused on looking for people not complying with the Stay at Home orders.
We don't apologise for that, that's our job in this crisis," he said.
"That's what the community wants us and needs us to do to keep you safe."
The Australian Defence Force (ADF) has been enlisted to help with the rollout of COVID-19 vaccines in the region, and Assistant Commissioner McKechnie said a team of 25 would be assisting Orana Mid-Western Police with their compliance operation.
The team will be tasked by district commander, Superintendent Danny Sullivan and his team to assist undertaking business inspections, mobile patrols, and making sure the health orders are being complied with.
"We really welcome the additional assistance provided by the ADF," Assistant Commissioner McKechnie said.
He sent a warning to those "flouting the rules" that they can guarantee they would be detected.
"I'm sure 99.9 per cent of people are doing the right thing," he said.
"As reported, we've got no cases of people over 70, maybe people over 70 are better at complying than some of our younger people.
"Please take notice of what I'm saying, we don't want to keep writing out those tickets, but we will.
"If you're out and about this evening or into the future, while this order is in place, there's a really strong chance that you're going to be detected and issued with one of those significant fines."
