It is planning festivities to mark the occasion on September 11.
In the lead-up to the milestone the Daily Liberal is profiling some of the sport's keen players...
Don and Pam Day
Don and Pam Day have been members of the Dubbo's croquet club since 2015 and have achieved a great partnership on the court as well as in life.
They heard about the come and try croquet days that were held at the Dubbo City Croquet Club, which Don was very reluctant to attend and after the first game they were hooked, Pam said.
Since joining the club, they have enjoyed the game immensely, also the company of the other members and the exercise you don't even know that you are doing.
The club has several members who enjoy caravanning and/or travelling across Australia, and as Pam says they have enjoyed playing social croquet at Urunga, Yepoon and lots of other clubs across Australia.
In 2017 Pam was runner-up in the singles competition and Don and Pam achieved the ultimate of winning the 2018 doubles competition on the grass courts at the club's former home.
The next year at the club's new home at Muller Park Tennis and Croquet Club in Brisbane Street, North Dubbo Don and Pam were runners-up in the doubles competition and runners-up in the hi-speed doubles.
Over the years Pam has been a active member of the committee and Don has been equipment manager and is currently the grounds maintenance person.
Ian and Sandra Burns
Ian and Sandra Burns became part of the croquet family after farming friends of theirs invited them to try something new in their lives after retiring from the family property north of Dubbo.
After a few introduction games they were hooked by the lifestyle of croquet.
You could play as an individual or with a partner and you were not committed to having to turn up every week as part of a team commitment.
With croquet play days being on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday mornings this suited their new retired lifestyle.
Peter and Del Heywood
Peter:
My first contact with croquet came after my wife invited me to come and play with her at her sport.
Up until that time I had played many sports mainly male segregated, and at that time I was playing golf twice a week.
This was when the Dubbo City Croquet Club was part of the Dubbo City Bowling Club complex along side number one oval.
The club at that time had a majority of women members while there were about four married couples.
At my first visit I met Leon and Dot O'Malley who took me under their wing and started training me in the skills of using a mallet.
Leon (nickname Tiger) and Dot were very experienced players winning trophies from competitions held over many parts in NSW.
I soon learnt how to hit that ball and sometimes even getting it through the hoop.
I learnt how to hit my ball into the opponents ball to move them away from the hoop.
I learnt how to jump the ball over the opponent ball.
I learnt where to leave my ball to protect it from and opponents attack.
I enjoyed Iearning a new skill to position my ball where I wanted it to go and I enjoyed the challenge of anticipating what the opposition would do after positioning my ball to a designated spot.
You would be mentally playing the game about three moves ahead at any one time.
I enjoy the mental challenge of the game and the camaraderie of the other members.
It is a very social inclusive group.
Del:
In 1956 I was a student at Dubbo High School and used to play tennis at the Paramount Tennis Club courts in Wingewarra Street.
So I was always aware of the croquet ladies and gentlemen.
They always looked smart in their red and white uniform.
There I was playing in the Astley Cup in the tennis team watching the croquet through the fence and now more than 60 years later I am on the other side of the fence playing croquet.
Loved my tennis and love my croquet.
We have sixty members in the club and play three mornings a week and will probably extend that by one more day as our membership is increasing.
As the saying goes, use it or loose it.
Active body and active mind.
