More than 50 Indigenous students from high schools in Gilgandra, Narromine, Wellington and Dubbo were consulted regarding their views for an Indigenous Voice to Parliament.

The students spent two hours discussing their Indigenous identity, learning where to go to find out more about their culture and educating non-Indigenous Australians about their history and recognising and understanding Indigenous identity.

Senior research fellow in the Offices of the Pro-Vice-Chancellor and Indigenous Engagement Felicity Taylor-Edwards helped to coordinate the event and said one of the things highlighted was their desire to have an identity within their communities.

"I was very impressed by the students," she said.

"One thing that stood out to me was one of the schools that travelled from out of Dubbo actually had their Principal with them the entire time.

"I noted this with him indicating I was aware of what other pulls he would have had on his time that morning and at such short notice and his response was very impactful and he said he wanted to show the students the importance he placed on this.

"Those students are very lucky to have such a Principal.
