Outside a couple of sporadic showers for most areas it was the first major rainfall of the month and, with Friday included, collectively the region's major centres received more than 250 millimetres across the weekend.

Orange, Bathurst, Dubbo, Mudgee and Lithgow received 263.3mm across those three days, which accounted for more than 80 per cent of those areas' combined average rainfall for March of 324.3mm.

Orange and Bathurst received a huge portion of that as 119.4mm and 55.2mm dumped on the respective cities, while Mudgee (38.8mm), Dubbo (26.8mm) and Lithgow (23.1mm) all had measured significant rain too.

While the recent rain ended the region's short dry spell to kick Autumn off, the severity of it looks to have put those areas of a fast-track to similarly wet month in comparison to 2020.

All those major centres were hammered by rain well beyond monthly averages last year, with Orange's fall last weekend just about matching the 131.2mm that fell last March as well.

With more rain forecast in Bathurst, Dubbo, Mudgee and Lithgow this week and beyond, those towns and cities appear to be on the same path, they all received between 100 and 135mm in March last year.

The SES is continuing to warn people of potential flash flooding in areas expecting heavy rainfalls and reminding people to keep an eye on any weather updates.

"If you live or are traveling through the impacted area, please never enter floodwater and keep clear of creeks and storm drains," The SES said, via social media.

"If you are caught in a weather event, bring your pets indoors with their food and water. Check the NSW SES website and listen to your local radio station and other media for weather warnings."
