Dubbo Regional Council has appointed director Dean Frost to act as interim chief executive officer when Michael McMahon retires.

Mr McMahon will retire at the end of March. The announcement was made last month.
In a statement on Monday evening, council said a selection panel of the mayor Ben Shields and deputy mayor Stephen Lawrence met last week to interview council's directors to choose someone for the role.
Mr Frost, who is director organisational performance, was chosen.

The council statement said Mr Frost brought "a diverse range of skills and experience that the panel felt were highly suitable for the interim CEO]".
"The fulltime position of CEO will be subject to a competitive senior executive selection process post the 2021 NSW Local Government elections [in September]," the statement said.
"With the director organisational performance role temporarily vacant during this period, an internal process will soon get under way to temporarily fill the position."
