About 7am on Sunday, January 3 police were called to reports of a physical altercation in William Street at Wellington.

Prior to police arrival a 24-year-old male had presented to Wellington Hospital where he was treated for a stab wound to his stomach. He was transferred to Dubbo Hospital where he was operated on.

He subsequently passed away Sunday afternoon as a result of the injuries.

Officers from the Orana Mid-Western Police District established a crime scene.

A 19-year-old man was arrested and taken to Dubbo Police station where he was charged with affray. He was refused bail and will appear before Dubbo Local Court on January 11.

Orana Mid-Western crime manager, Detective Chief Inspector Denise Godden said at this stage police don't know the cause of the physical altercation, but knew there were about 10 people involved and they are believed to be known to each other.

"We do know that they do know one another, exact connections is really hard to establish, but we do know they do know one another," she said.

"We've been able to speak to a few of those people, but we still need the public to come forward.

"We're hoping that somebody was driving around with dash cam, we're also asking for CCTV footage as well as any witnesses who may be able to identify all of those people that were at that melee."

Detectives have established Strike Force Larelar to investigate the circumstances surrounding the man's death.

They are being assisted by local detectives from the Chifley police district, Central West Police District as well as the homicide squad from Sydney.

"We do have a description of a vehicle, however we have already seized that vehicle and it's been forensically examined," Detective Chief Inspector Godden said.

"The majority of people have been assisting us, but we still need more people to come forward with information in relation to it, that's why we're asking for that dash cam and CCTV footage."
