Dubbo Aboriginal high school students were encouraged to enter the Dubbo Koori Interagency Network (DKIN) art competition earlier this year. The competition was run by the volunteers of DKIN in an effort to create a uniform that represented their network and to also recognise and highlight the talents of our local Aboriginal students.
The artwork submissions required a story to be told, one that represented first nation's people coming together and the importance of community and communication.
Dawn Towney, Chairperson at DKIN Dawn Towney said Janaya's art work incorporated all components of the brief and her winning piece will be showcased for years to come as the competition grows and continues annually.
"Janaya's winning artwork will be displayed on shirts worn by our Dubbo Koori Interagency Network volunteers, with a competition being held each year to add to the design," Ms Towney said.
Ms Towney congratulated Janaya and is looking forward to further connecting with the Aboriginal students of Dubbo.
"We want to congratulate and thank Janaya for entering her artwork and look forward to presenting her with her very own shirt."
"Making a connection with our young people is important, and we're honored to be able to recognize their efforts," Ms Towney said.
Dubbo College Senior Campus Aboriginal Education Officer Ms Sue Sharp was impressed with Janaya's achievements.
"Firstly, and most importantly, congratulations to Janaya. She put in the effort to submit her artwork on time encompassing the requirements - she definitely earned this recognition," Ms Sharp said.
"Janaya represents her culture proudly in everything that she does, she's a very talented young girl, she's a great kid and it's pleasing to see her efforts being rewarded," she said.
Year 12 Dubbo College student, Janaya Rose said she liked the project offered her an opportunity to express herself and communicate what's important to her.
"When Sue told me about the competition, I was keen to enter," Janaya said.
"My artwork represents the community in Dubbo, coming together and being there for each other, I think that's important," she said.
Janaya admits her award was a pleasant surprise, and wonderful way to end the school year on a high.
"I was surprised when Wanita and Dawn arrived at the school to make the presentation - I look forward to spending the voucher on something special for me and my family," Janya said.
Diyaamalang is the Wiradjuri word meaning 'leader that influences for good'.
