Shortly after 1pm, Dubbo firefighters were called following reports of the blaze on the Newell Highway approximately 10 kilometres north of Brocklehurst.
Dubbo Station Officer, Greg Croake, said they attended the scene along with Orana RFS and Dubbo Police.
"It appears the driver had a fault with airlines to his trailer which caused the brakes to come on while driving and this has started the fire," he said.
"Other road users were able to alert the driver to the smoke and he was able to pull off the road and detach the prime mover from the trailer to keep it safe.
"We were able to extinguish the fire quickly and limited damage to the rear of the trailer, saving the front half of the load.
"The driver did a great job getting the truck off the road and controlling the situation."

Officer Croake said it was important for everyone to be alert at this time of year.
"Everyone needs to remember there are a lot of trucks on the road at this time of year, especially with harvest, so people need to stay alert on the road and truck drivers should check their equipment is working correctly."
No road closures were needed due to the incident.
