The Office of the Advocate for Children and Young People (ACYP) spoke directly with more than 400 children and young people from areas in NSW affected by extensive exposure to drought, bushfires and flooding.
This was followed up with quantitative polling of a further 1,000 young people across NSW and was compiled into a Children and Young People's Experience of Disaster report.
The Advocate for Children and Young People spokesperson Zoë Robinson said the report gave children and young people a platform to inform decision makers and service providers how to best continue supporting their needs before, during and after disasters.
"Not only does the report detail their experiences but it sets-out ten recommendation categories by children and young people to help ensure future disaster responses can meet their specific needs," Ms Robinson said.
"We want to ensure the structures to effectively help children and young people are ready should they need to be used."
The report highlights the ways in which children and young people want to be included in the planning and implementation of solutions.
Report data revealed the key findings to be a significant impact on mental health and wellbeing, destruction and damage caused to schools, therefore affecting access to education, engagement, learning and academic achievement, an impact of housing stability for children and young people including damage to homes and farms as well as displacement and relocation, youth unemployment, loss of connection to land and feelings of neglect.
Ms Robinson said the report reiterated the need and desire for children and young people to have a voice, as well as needing practical and financial assistance, evacuation centres, education, access to infrastructure, community recovery, awareness, disaster preparedness and information provision and the implementation of activities and programs for youth.
