The racing also marked the first use of the new criterium track at the Dubbo Regional Cycling Facility in competition.
Riders across four senior grades and one junior grade gave very positive feedback regarding the surface and layout. There were, however, a few gripes about the temperature. The single figure temperature combined with some gusty winds saw most riders donning their jackets or arm warmers.
It was young rider Danny Barber who had the honour of taking the first win on the new track.
Barber came home in front of Jason Farr and Haylee Fuller to take out A Grade. A Grade this week saw the inclusion of NSW Elite Time Trial Champion Simone Grounds and young up and coming rider Trent Hines joining his father Tim Hines. Talented duo Kurt and Dylan Eather were away at their Rauland Cycling Team training camp.
B Grade saw a high quality, experienced field take to the track. It was visiting Central Coast rider Simon Heppell who took first place from Graeme Peadon in second and Sam Fitzgerald in third. Darrel Wheeler just held off Craig May to finish in fourth position.
C Grade featured a win for Isabelle Russell from Jeff Sargent in second and Imogen Fuller in third. Isabelle Russel has featuring very well in the virtual National Junior Road Series. Remarkably, the day after winning the Dubbo Criterium in very windy conditions Russell finished in third place of the fourth round of the series attacking toward the end and coming in just behind the winners. It was a great display of strength to secure a place on the virtual podium. The virtual course was s a carbon copy of the Junior National Titles to be held in Wagga Wagga in September and the result is a strong indication that Russell's hard work is paying off.
D Grade saw young rider Thomas Williamson fall straight back into the strong form that finished the 2019 series, taking the win. Jacen Huggett, in his first bike race finished a strong second with the very experienced Mick Cooper in third.
Emily Hines was too strong in the Junior event taking a dominant win with young Cooper Farr being buffeted by the wind all day to finish in second.
Racing returns to Dubbo Regional Cycling Facility this Saturday with round two of the Dubbo City Toyota Road Series being criterium events for all grades. For more info and to enter please visit entryboss.cc by Friday. There will be no entries on the day.
