As part of cost-cutting measures and a revised schedule for this year, Rugby Australia announced earlier in the week the National Rugby Championship (NRC) will not be played in 2020.
The planned domestic Super Rugby season and mooted Tests against New Zealand clash with the traditional NRC calendar slot later in the year.
Dubbo Kangaroos junior Tom Robertson used the NRC to work his way back to fitness last year while Coonamble product Ned Hanigan was another to represent the Eagles last year.
The competition was't only beneficial for the players as the Eagles were involved with a number of community events and junior players from across the western area converged on Dubbo to spend time with the stars of Australian rugby.
There is yet to be formal Rugby Australia advice sent to clubs about the future of the NRC.
The Canberra Vikings is another club which takes part in the NRC and Vikings Group chief executive Anthony Hill is one of many looking for information.
"I'm disappointed to see it not happen because I think it was starting to get legs," Hill said.
