The state government is considering a request by the developers of the Bloomfield Medical Centre to allow for a supermarket to be part of retail development on a site alongside the new private hospital.
If it goes ahead, it could make things a little easier for Dubbo residents who travel to Orange for medical treatment.
Some 209 jobs are likely to be provided both directly and indirectly as a result of the proposed Bloomfield development.
- Report on rezoning proposal for Bloomfield.
A report in the rezoning proposal said the development would create many jobs.
"In total, some 209 jobs are likely to be provided both directly and indirectly as a result of the proposed Bloomfield development. This includes a number of youth employment opportunities with retail developments generally employing a large number of younger staff," it said.
The report said it would provide much-needed shopping facilities for health workers, people living in the nearby Shiralee residential area and for workers at the Cadia mine.
The zoning needs to change from general residential to local centre.
The developers have proposed a convenience store would initially be built at the site, known as Precinct 1, fronting Forest Road.
It is proposed by 2024-25 a major supermarket would open at the site.
This staged approach has been taken to limit the affect on existing businesses in the CBD.
It said the potential trade area population for the retail area at Bloomfield was forecast to grow from about 17,000 people now to more than 20,000 in the next 10 years.
The proposal is on display on the Orange City Council website until June 19.
Council will prepare a report based on public comments to put to the government for a decision.
